Target group:
The purpose of this course is to train E/I Supervisor, E/I Engineer and E/I Technician who involved in the selection, installation or maintenance of electrical or instrumentation equipment in potentially hazardous areas.
The course is strictly following the US standards NEC 500 – 505, International standard IEC 60079.
Course objective:
The objective of this course is to give participants a good understanding in the theory and practical application of hazardous locations are located where explosive hazards may exist due to flammable gases, vapors or dust.
Safe methods of selection, installation and maintenance of electrical and instrumentation equipment, suitable for use in such zones, are described in this course which utilizes the current International Standards.
Learning Outcomes:
Ignition sources in hazardous areas are responsible for loss of life and long-term production downtime within the Oil & Gas industry each year.
Upon completion of this course and provision of a successful assessment, the student will possess the skills necessary to be capable of safely selecting, installing and maintaining electrical and instrumentation equipment in potentially hazardous areas.
Day 1
- General principles
- Gas grouping
- Upper and Lower explosive limits
- Ignition temperatures and energies
- T ratings, Ingress Protection
- ATEX, US standards NEC 500 – 505
- Hazardous areas by Zone & Division.
Day 2
- Certification and marking of Ex equipment
- Flameproof Exd protection concepts and standards
- Exd Question and Answers workshop
- Demonstration of compound filled and diaphragm seal gland assembly
- Practical Exercise: Assembly of compound and diaphragm seal type glands
- Group discussions on past North Sea explosive incidents: Brent Alpha -Cormorant Alpha – Piper Alpha.
Day 3
- Increased Safety Exe protection concepts and standards
- Exn protection concepts and standards
- Exd/Exe/Exn Questions and Answers workshop
- Exi protection concepts and standards
- Exp protection concepts and standards
Day 4
- Hybrid methods of protection
- Inspection and maintenance standards
- Exp/Exi/Hybrid protection Question and Answers workshop
- Knowledge assessment of candidate understanding
- Competence Results
- Group final discussion
